 We’ll be continuing our showcase of contemporary Japanese cinema this coming Tuesday with a screening of the film ‘Linda Linda Linda’, a quirky and endearing tale about a group of four schoolgirls as they work hard to put together a rock band in time for the school festival. The plot may be as straightforward as they come, but what really sets this movie apart is the characterisation, as we follow the lives of these girls over the days preceding the festival, as they practice until the wee hours and struggle with their own personal conflicts.
The soundtrack, comprising the girls’ performances of covers of the legendary 80s Japanese punk rock group The Blue Hearts, is also addictive – and it really is only in a Japanese film that someone would get to sing “like a rat, I want to be beautiful” and make it sound heartfelt! So come along, take a break from work on a Tuesday night for an hour or so, and enjoy! The film will be in Japanese with English subtitles.

Feel like becoming a Japanese pop star for one evening?
Whether you are hoping to finally make your break into pop-stardom, or just would like to enjoy watching others as they give it a try, our Karaoke Night this Saturday is the perfect way to experience firsthand the Japanese cultural craze that is Karaoke! There will be a huge selection of songs available, both in Japanese and in English, and regardless of whether you are a karaoke veteran or have yet to make your debut… whether you are the next Utada Hikaru or feel as if your singing ability leaves a lot to be desired (fit me into that second category!) it should be an absolute blast!

 We’re almost half way through term now, and what better way to celebrate on a Friday night than with a drink at one of Oxford’s finest cocktail bars, right in the centre of town, and with half-price cocktails to boot? If you can’t make the pub meet on Thursday night (or even if you can!), then this will be a good opportunity to meet the committee and others involved in OUJS for an informal drink, possibly practice your English/Japanese and generally take a break from work. Pop in anytime, talk to many people, get some drinks and have a good time!!!

 Join us this coming Wednesday for our first film night of the term. We'll be kicking things off with the film 'それでもボクはやってない' or 'I Just Didn't Do it' which is a harrowing exposition of the Japanese legal system. Based on a true story, when a young man is falsely accused of molesting a high-school girl on a train, he is arrested, charged and put through endless court sessions all the while insisting that he is innocent. This is a fascinating film which is definitely worth a watch. The film will be in Japanese with English subtitles.

We're two weeks into term already, and perhaps the work is getting a bit much - what better way to take a break than enjoying some delicious Japanese food and a cool beer? This Saturday, come along to Oriel College from 7pm and enjoy some freshly grilled Yakitori with us!
