This weekend sees us kick off our biggest event of the year, in the form of our annual Japan Matsuri Festival. This will be three action-packed days of events, comprising an eclectic mix of Japanese food, culture and entertainment, both traditional and modern.

We'll be kicking off the festivities this Friday with a karaoke party down at AT Box, and will be hosting a range of cultural and artistic events over the following days designed to showcase the best of Japan and Japanese Culture. Entry to all events, aside from the karaoke, will be free for society members and non-members alike - so why don't you join us for a weekend of celebration, Japanese style! Join us this coming Wednesday for our first film night of term, where we will be screening the 2007 film 転々 (Adrift in Tokyo). Odagiri Joe stars as Takemura, a hopeless drifter of a student who has managed to rack up over 800,000 yen in debt and naturally has no way of paying it back. His situation seems helpless until one day, Fukuhara, the ruthless-looking debt collector who lent him the money, offers to cancel his debt simply if the student agrees to accompany him on a walk around Tokyo. So begins a quirky tour of the city by these two most-unlikely of companions, as we follow their wondering through the city and witness their interactions with the people around them. Through it all, the film gives us a humorous look at a myriad of topics, from cosplay and fake marriages, to annoyingly perky teens and small Tokyo retail establishments that have no conceivable way of paying their monthly rent. The film will be in Japanese with English subtitles.

Welcome back to Oxford for another event-filled term with OUJS (see our Calendar page for details). Things kick off on Thursday of 1st week (22nd January) with the resumption of our FREE weekly Japanese language classes, followed by our weekly pub meet. If you would like to start the term off by learning some Japanese, but didn't attend last term, please feel free to come along and we will find a class for you... or just pop along for a relaxed drink to kick off the new term after! We look forward to seeing many of you there.

As the term draws to a close, we will be celebrating with our last event before Christmas - the annual OUJS Christmas Drinks. The time and location will be the same as for our regular weekly pub meets, down at the Royal Oak Pub on Thursday night. So whether you are coming straight down after our Japanese classes, or just want to enjoy a few drinks with us before heading off for Christmas, throw your books to one side and come join us in what promises to the best and merriest Christmas Drinks in Oxford!
