大変お待たせいたしました。The HT11 Termcard is now ready!

We can't go through everything here, but heres a bit of a taste: This Sunday, we are starting with an event which Japanese people often celebrate the new year with, calligraphy. Some of the expert language teachers from the society will be giving us guidance on everything from how to hold the brush to tips that will make your (hopefully already good) kanji look more sleek and smooth. The event is free for members, but there will be a £4.50 charge for non-members to cover the costs of equipment. We have regular A4 style calligraphy paper sufficient for one or two characters, and long scroll type paper for advanced people who would like to write an idiom or a proverb. If you don't know any Japanese, its ok to do it in English too, though you might want to look up a few characters with meanings that appeal to you. The event will be in Lincoln College from 4:00pm. The event has a limited number of places, and those interested in attending are advised to contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to book a place, though it will be possible to simply show up and take part if there are places left.

Following this, next weekend (5 Feb.) sees the launching of the OUJS Shogi Club, headed by Enki Cheung. At the first event, to be held at Brasenose College from 3:00pm, Enki is going to introduce beginners to shogi, after which we'll have a challenge match between people of similar levels. The idea is to get your skill levels up before this year's Matsuri guest speaker, current British Shogi Chamption Steven Cain delivers his lecture and supervision session in March. For all of you that are up for the challenge, whether you already love playing shogi or just heard about it now, attendance at this event is strongly recommended.

Finally, this term will see the much celebrated OUJS Matsuri, a weekend of Japan extravagance, in 7th Week. We'll start off with a professionally instructed sake tasting on friday night, after which on Satuday we'll have current British Shogi Champion Steven Cain give us a talk on shogi (for a general audience) and some advice on how to improve our game, and later that night we'll have our annual sushi night. We'll end the Matsuri with a viewing of two of the most celebrated works of Miyazaki Hayao (宮崎駿), Lupin the Third and the Castle of Cagliostro (ルパン三世 カリオストロの城), and Porco Rosso (紅の豚).

Hello everybody and welcome back to the Oxford University Japan Society! This year we start the term with the Freshers' Drinks event this Saturday night (9th of October) at the University Club. The event will run from 7pm to 11pm so it would be great if people could show up at their convenience, even for a short time just to show their face and say hi. Drinks will be free (Asahi, Sapporo and Soft Drinks), as well as snacks. Please note that despite the name, this event is open to everyone!

Also this term, we have a great range of events, ranging from the screening of Kazuhiro Soda's film Senkyo (選挙) and accompanying introductory lecture by Professor Ian Neary of the Nissan Institute, to the ever popular gourmet events (Yakitori Night and Edamame Trip). The society will also be putting together a 5 on 5 football team which will participate in matches with other country-societies (so far we have matches planned against Hong Kong and Thailand).

Hello to all and a big welcome back to Oxford. We have a busy term ahead of us as we enter a new decade. Please find our term card here. Events this term include film nights, cocktails, dinner at Edamame, and also our very own matsuri (more information to come). Language classes will begin on Thursday of 1st week (21st) at 6pm in the Oriental Institute. Come along to the pub meets afterwards (Royal Oak), join in the conversations, relax, and maybe learn to play some 将棋 (shogi) for a friendly tournament later on in term. As well as trying to fit all of this into term, we've even included a week for study!

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the events!

Mark

Just to remind everyone that our language classes will begin at 18:00 on the 22nd October. The venue is the oriental Institute, to which a map can be found here. Please arrive on time so that we can split students into groups. We hope to see you there. Remember that we will also be going to the Royal Oak afterwards for our weekly pub meet. I'll also bring a shogi board with me in case anyone wants to learn to play.
