Hello everybody, welcome back to Oxford University Japan Society! We, the committee, hope you have had a pleasant summer and are ready for this new eventful term! Again, this year we start off with our amazing Fresher's Drinks event in Week 1. Free drinks including Asahi, Sapporo and other various beverages will be served! As well as free snacks! The event will run from 7pm to 11pm so it would be great if people could show up at their convenience, even for a short time just to show their face and say hi. Please note that despite the name, this event is open to everyone!
Also, our popular weekly free language classes will commence on week 2 Thursday at 6:00pm Oriental Institute, whether you have a passion to learn or teach Japanese, please don't hesitate to come along and we are sure that we will have the right class for you.
Other than that, we have many other events installed for this term, including gourment events and film nights, (details can be found on term card). We look forward to meet you all!

Welcome back to Oxford. I hope you have all had a relaxing holiday and are ready for another term. For those sitting exams, we wish you the best of luck and hope that you might be able to join us for some relaxation. Language classes and pub meets start today, and we will start the term's events off with a picnic at the Univeristy Parks, to enjoy the (hopefully) good weather of Oxford in its most beautiful term. We're hoping to do abit of an *undoukai*, or sports day, where we will have a few fun and games as well as food. We also have an Edamame night, and the Concert by the Tokyo String Quartet for the benefit of the earthquake relief efforts will happenin week 5.
The Asian Drinks Festival is also taking place, where the different societies will be exhibiting the unique drinks from their country
and OUJS will have a stall selling sake etc. Most importantly, this term we
also have the society's Annual General Meeting (AGM), where we will report
on the society's activities for the year as well as its accounts, and most importantly, elect a new committee. The committee consists of President (currently held by Ronan), Vice President (Naz), Secretary (Carmen), Treasurer (Enki), Language Class Co-ordinator (Naoko), Social Secretary (Aoi), Membership Secretary (Enki), Webmaster (n/a). Individuals may run for multiple positions with the proviso that the President, Secretary and Treasurer be separate individuals. These three posts must also be held by students of Oxford University, though the other positions are open to all OUJS members. We strongly encourage you to attend the event even if you do not plan to run for a position, as this is your chance to have a say in the future of the society. As a bonus, we will show the film 'stratosphere girl' after the meeting. For those interested in running for a position, on the other hand, you should write to

Dear OUJS Members
A heartfelt thanks to all of you who helped collect on the street. After 1 week of collecting on the street, we were able to raise a total of more than £15,000 on behalf of the Red Cross relief efforts in northeastern Japan. We also received many encouraging and heartwarming letters from those of you who couldn't make it and we know you were also with us in spirit. In the meantime, a few mid-vac notices.
Firstly, on Monday (April 4th) night at 7pm there will be a charity dinner at the Karma restaurant in Cowley (not Cowley Road). I will definitely be there and I hope that those of you in Oxford can make it. It would be an excellent opportunity to catch up out of term, as well as to meet new people. It is going to be held at the award-winning Karma restaurant and the price is £24.95pp and includes a Japanese fashion show and indian belly-dancing performances. All money except for the cost of raw materials will go to the Tsunami victims in Japan. Please write to

Secondly, I'd like to remind everyone that there is going to be a massive Japan-fair at the Marlborough School in Woodstock on the 9th and 10th of April. This event is organised by Helping Hands for Japan, a local charity set up to help with the long term care of earthquake victims in Japan. There will be Taiko, shamisen and Shakuhachi performances as well as Kendo, Karate and Katana demonstrations. There will also be a charity bazaar and sushi will be served. Entrance tickets are £6 for half a day or £11 for the whole day but if you book online at http://www.helpinghandsforjapan.org.uk/?page_id=141 there will be a discount.
Hope everyone is well and having a pleasant holiday.
Sincerely
OUJS Committee

No doubt all of you have heard about of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami
that struck the northeast of Japan on Friday. Our thoughts are with the victims and
families. As a society, we have not yet received any reports of Oxford Students and
family being affected, but would appreciate any news on the matter.
We would also like to alert our members to the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund
established by members of the London Business School, but which has rapidly
developed into a coalition of students accross the UK to raise funds for the
Japanese Red Cross. They provide a reliable an on-line channel to donate to
the Japanese Red Cross for all (their website is in English). Simply click on the link
in the 'Donations' page. You do not need to be a member of the University of London
to register. We hope that you will give generously to this cause, though we will let you
know of more opportunities as they present themselves. OUJS hopes to participate in
joint events with JERF soon and we will keep you all updated on this.
We hope to give you more news when it becomes available. In the meantime, we pray for
the safety of those in deep distress.
